ISCHIA, THE AETOS PROJECT TAKES OFF TRANSPORT OF MEDICAL MATERIALS WITH HI-TECH CARGO DRONES: BLOOD AND BIOLOGICAL SAMPLES ARRIVE FROM THE SKY

Pozzuoli-Ischia, February 20, 2025 – Blood bags and biological materials were transported in just 15 minutes from Santa Maria delle Grazie Hospital in Pozzuoli to Casamicciola Hospital in Ischia, thanks to the Aetos project by Unmanned4you—a company dedicated to innovating transport, delivery, surveillance, search & rescue (SAR), and environmental monitoring—and the use of cargo drones from FlyingBasket, an innovative high-tech company from South Tyrol that has rapidly become a global player in the design and development of cargo drones for logistics.

Moritz Moroder, CEO of FlyingBasket:

"The healthcare sector is one of the key areas of development for cargo drones in logistics. The use of drones offers significant environmental sustainability advantages, reducing pollutant emissions and fossil fuel consumption."

Valeria Fascione, Regional Minister for Research, Innovation, and Startups in Campania: "This is a very important day, and the test was successful. We are still in a research and experimentation phase, but it is encouraging to see how these solutions are evolving to become increasingly functional and beneficial for citizens and patients."

Carmine Esposito, Founder of Unmanned4you: "This project involves collaborations with public and private entities that have created strong synergies to bring innovation to the healthcare sector with social benefits."

This marks the second phase of the Aetos project’s trial in the ASL Napoli 2 area, aiming to assess the feasibility of blood and biological material transport via drones. The flight was conducted by FlyingBasket’s team in collaboration with Unmanned4you. The successful transport flight took place on Tuesday, February 18, following a previous test on February 4. The drones covered the 17-kilometer distance between the two hospitals, completing four test flights and carrying a payload of 5 kilograms.

"This project," stated Carmine Esposito, Co-founder of Unmanned4you, "brings together public and private entities, creating strong synergy to drive innovation in the healthcare sector for social good."

"The transport of biological material, medicines, and emergency services via drones is a fundamental innovation," said Valeria Fascione, Regional Minister for Research, Innovation, and Startups in Campania. "This is an important day, as the test was successful. The trials between the hospitals of Pozzuoli and Casamicciola are still in progress, and we need to experiment with these new solutions, which could prove extremely useful for the community. These services not only enhance emergency response capabilities but also help define new industry standards. The future of these technologies is approaching rapidly, and they could soon become an integral part of daily life. We are still in a research and experimentation phase, but it is encouraging to see these solutions evolving to become increasingly functional and beneficial for citizens and patients."

Moritz Moroder, CEO and Co-founder of FlyingBasket, emphasised: "Using drones to safely connect remote areas is revolutionizing logistics services. The healthcare sector, central to our successful test flight, is one of the primary areas of development for cargo drones in logistics. With this technology, we connected two hospitals in just 15 minutes, whereas traditional transport methods take significantly longer. Additionally, drones provide significant environmental benefits by reducing emissions and fossil fuel consumption. By maintaining a focus on innovation and quality, we aim to become a key player in the aerial logistics market with drones, offering solutions that make the sector more accessible and sustainable for all."

Carmine Esposito, Co-founder of Unmanned4you, extended his thanks: "I would like to thank Dr. Fabio Pagano, Director of the Phlegraean Fields Archaeological Park, for allowing us to conduct the successful tests in the designated areas. My gratitude also goes to the Mayor of Casamicciola, Giosy Ferrandino, Dr. Ciaramaglia of the Casamicciola Municipal Police, Captain Franco di Noto, Giulio Lauro, President of the Borgo di Mare Consortium, Nicola Iacono of EPM (a facility management company), as well as our drone pilots, Manfredi Fronzoni and Alessio Campana, and the entire FlyingBasket team."

The Companies

FlyingBasket is a highly innovative tech company utilizing advanced drone technology equipped with fully autonomous flight systems that can operate in adverse weather conditions and challenging terrains. The company’s cargo drones, developed through intensive research and the expertise of its 22 employees (from Italy, Germany, Spain, Belgium, Portugal, Bulgaria, Poland, and India—reflecting its dynamic and international nature), provide crucial logistics solutions across multiple industries, including construction, telecommunications, forestry, and energy.

Founded in Bolzano in 2015 by engineering brothers Moritz and Matthias Moroder, FlyingBasket has grown significantly, developing both products and expertise in drone operations. The company became Italy’s first certified LUC (Light UAS Operator Certificate) operator at the beginning of 2024, allowing it to autonomously authorize its own drone missions. The LUC certificate, issued by ENAC (National Civil Aviation Authority), further solidifies FlyingBasket’s leadership in drone logistics and cross-border operations across Europe.

Unmanned4you was founded with the mission of driving innovation in the transportation and delivery sector, as well as in surveillance, search & rescue (SAR), and environmental monitoring. The company is an ENAC-identified operator and a partner of major national and international industry associations, including the Campania Aerospace Technological District, the Drones and Advanced Air Mobility Observatory at the Politecnico di Milano, and Alis.  Unmanned4you provides a range of services, including emergency management, monitoring and prevention, certified thermographic inspections, aerial photogrammetry and 3D mapping, precision agriculture, infrastructure monitoring (roads, railways, bridges, viaducts, and tunnels), as well as aerial filming for TV productions, movies, sports events, and entertainment.

The company is also actively involved in research & development projects, notably “Aetos” and “Elyhub”:

  • The Aetos project focuses on transporting goods and medical supplies to hard-to-reach, sparsely populated areas.
  • The Elyhub project aims to support the development of infrastructure for advanced air mobility.
